
Five Buddhist monks including Ven. Bengamuwa Nalaka Thero and two women have been acquitted from the case filed against them for obstructing the public and damaging public property during a protest.
The case was filed by Colombo Fort Police for damaging public property and inconveniencing the public during the protest staged by a group of disabled war veterans near the Presidential Secretariat on November 07 , 2016.
When the case was taken up today (27) before Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne, attorneys representing the defendants pointed out that the police had failed to file the case under the correct article.
After considering the facts presented, the magistrate ordered the accused be acquitted and released and also instructed the Fort Police to file the case once against under the correct article.
