The United National Party (UNP) today condemned the statement issued by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa on the occasion of the country’s 69th independence anniversary.
In his statement, Rajapaksa had questioned as to whether a country would be remaining in order to celebrate the 70th Independence Day.
UNP Colombo District MP Mujibur Rahman charged that by issuing such statements with the intention of disturbing the masses, the former President has become like ‘Hanuman.’
Speaking to reporters in Colombo, he said that it is the country’s misfortune that Rajapaksa is making such racists remarks, holding small meetings and visiting Temples.
He claimed that although Mahinda Rajapaksa ended the war, he failed at reconciliation and that he created racism instead.
