
Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, Mangala Samaraweera has paid a courtesy call on Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom at the President’s Office.
President Gayoom welcomed the Minister to the Maldives and conveyed his greetings and good wishes to the President of Sri Lanka, a statement said.
“During the call, the President highlighted the excellent relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, and stated that the Maldives attaches high importance to Sri Lanka, as it is one of the closest partners of the Maldives.”
“Furthermore, the President also noted that there is high potential for greater cooperation in the fields of health and education,” it said.
The Minister conveyed his gratitude for the collaborative environment the Maldives has always offered and commended the leadership of the President for the impressive economic development of the Maldives.
Samaraweera is leading the Sri Lanka delegation to the Third Session of the Joint Commission between Maldives and Sri Lanka held from February 08th to 09th at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maldives.
The Senior Official’s Meeting preceded the Ministerial level discussions.
The Joint Commission discussed matters related to economic cooperation, tourism, fisheries, education, health, youth & sports skills development, employment and cultural affairs.
The previous Joint Commission was held in Colombo in the year 2014.
