The United Kingdom has urged the United Nations Human Rights Council to give Sri Lanka more time to fully implement the resolution adopted at the council in 2015 and other post-conflict measures.
“I welcome the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister’s constructive engagement here,” the Minister for Asia and the Pacific at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, Alok Sharma, said.
He was delivering the UK statement at the Ministerial segment of the 34th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday.
“We must give Sri Lanka time to fully implement the October 2015 resolution and post-conflict measures required to embed stability, reconciliation and justice.”
Sharma also had a meeting with Minister Samaraweera on the sidelines of the UNHRC session.
“Discussed the need to embed stability, reconciliation & justice in Sri Lanka with Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera at the UNHRC,” he Tweeted.
