The family of Sri Lankan national who had been arrested in Maldives over allegations of plotting to assassinate the President of the Maldives, Abdulla Yameen, have appealed to the President of Sri Lanka to engage in a negotiation to allow the suspect to be released from detention, sources reveal.
The individual was arrested in December of 2015, as he was charged responsible for causing social unrest among the public.
Sources reveal that the individuals had traveled to the Maldives as a close friend had promised him a job in the country, however upon arriving the “friend” had supposedly fled the scene along with a large sum of cash that was provided by individual himself.
According to family members, the accused has been acquitted of all the charges against him by a Maldivian court after only four witnesses were able to identify him during an identified parade. However, the authorities have refused his release as the accusations made against him were ‘quite severe’, and have urged diplomatic intervention if the person was to be released.
The family of the accused stated that the individual has been detained by Maldivian authorities without a conviction for the past 5 months and had requested the President to help out in the matter as soon as possible.
