National Freedom Front (NFF) leader MP Wimal Weerawansa has been granted bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court. 

He was ordered released on a cash bail of Rs 50,000 and two personal bails of Rs 500,000 each by Magistrate lanka Jayaratne. 

The former minister was also ordered to hand over his passport to the court as he has been barred from leaving the country. 

The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court had previously rejected a bail application filed by the UPFA MP, who was arrested on January 10 and has been in remand prison ever since. 

Weerawansa had resorted to staging a hunger strike while in prison over the rejection of his bail applications while he had also been hospitalised as a result of this. 

A Counsel appearing on behalf of Weerawansa had earlier filed the application seeking bail for his client on April 03.

A request was also made to grant bail for Weerawansa considering the medical condition of his daughter who was undergoing treatment at a state hospital.
 
The Counsel pointed out the child had been hospitalized due to depression caused following the arrest of her father.

National Freedom Front (NFF) leader also commenced a hunger strike while in custody and later decided to end it.

He was admitted to the Prison Hospital on March 26 due to his deteriorating health condition. Later he was transferred to the Colombo National Hospital.
 
A revision application filed by the MP was rejected by the Colombo High Court on March 21.

The Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID) arrested Weerawansa after he arrived to give a statement pertaining to allegations of misusing state vehicles on January 10.
  
He has been accused of misusing several vehicles belonging to the Presidential Secretariat Office, during his tenure as the Minister of Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities, and thereby causing losses to the tune of Rs. 41 million to the government
