I am fully committed towards taking action to ensure that the Tamil population can reclaim their land ownership as soon as possible, Opposition leader R. Sampanthan says.
The Opposition leader stated this at a press conference held earlier today (17).
Sampanthan stated that the issue of land ownership has now become a serious problem and that the land should be given back to their owners without delay.
He further stated that whilst some land would be utilized for security purposes in order to build a runway in Walikaman, it should not delay the transfer of the remaining lands to their rightful owners.
Sampanthan urged the Government to provide a solution immediately for the citizens still displaced from their homes, on account of the civil war that lasted nearly 30 years.
He further explained that the question of freeing the lands of the Northern Province, currently under the custody of the security forces, had been discussed previously at a meeting held in the Ministry of Defense, and added that several more discussions were scheduled to be held, after which he hoped to arrive at a final decision.
