The agreement between India and Sri Lanka would not be allowed to go through without the consent of the public, leader of the Jathika Hela Urumaya, MP Udaya Gammanpila says.
The MP stated this at a press conference held in Colombo today (24).
He also said that the true intention of the Indian Prime Minister’s forthcoming visit was to take advantage of Sri Lanka, rather than to celebrate Vesak.
The MP explained that Trincomalee was one of the ten best natural harbours in the world, one that foreign nations have fought tooth and nail to acquire for centuries, and added that handing over such a treasure to a superpower like India was the equivalent of giving chickens to a fox for safekeeping.
He warned that what starts out with fuel tanks in Trincomalee would end with Sri Lanka becoming a domain under the Government of India.
Gammanpila also commended Susil Premajayantha’s wise suggestion to use the tanks to store crude oil, as Sri Lanka currently has the capacity to store crude oil sufficient for just two weeks, which could potentially lead to a national incident of fuel shortage in future.
He stated that whilst the current government would return home after the next election, their decisions would affect the nation for generations to come, explaining that the agreements they sign today would take hundreds of years to be undone.
