Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Development, Mahinda Awaraweera has issued an instruction to the Nara Corporation to investigate the use of high-voltage light bulbs in fish stalls.
It has been reported that the use of high-voltage light bulbs in private fish stalls is a cause for the premature expiration of fish.
Minister Mahinda Amaraweera explained that the heat emanating from these high-voltage bulbs was the reason of the premature expiration, but that the glow of the bulb prevented customers from noticing this.
The Minister further stated that it was the responsibility of the fishmongers to sell customers fresh fish for consumption, and requested the Nara Corporation to submit a report as soon as possible based on their findings.
The Minister also requested the Nara Corporation to look into the possibility of using LED light bulbs in place of the existing high-voltage bulbs.
