The Ministry of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs has made the decision to transfer the Kalutara Prison Commissioner, effective immediately.
Minister of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs, D. M. Swaminathan has instructed the Ministry’s Secretary, W. M. P. G. Wickramasinghe to immediately transfer the Kalutara Prison Commissioner and conduct a methodical investigation.
Several reasons contributed towards the decision to transfer the Prison Commissioner, according to Minister. D. M. Swaminathan.
The main reason that affected the decision is said to be the recommendation given by the three-position committee appointed to look into the shooting of the two prison buses in Kalutara.
In addition, the attack on the suspect imprisoned for allegedly murdering ‘Samayang’, the discovery of a mobile phone hidden inside a cabbage in the prison kitchen and the discovery of tobacco within prison premises also contributed towards this decision to transfer.
Minister Swaminathan further stated that if prison officials were found to be guilty in any way in connection with these incidents, they would be duly punished regardless of their ranks or positions.
