The Department of Excise has launched investigations to apprehend the main suspect in the drug racket responsible for smuggling crystal meth, also known as ice, into the country.
Excise officers recently arrested two women in the Elakanda area in Wattala with 200g of crystal methamphetamine, one of the most addictive substances in the world. The drugs seized in the raid reportedly have a street value of around Rs 2 million.
Following the interrogation of the arrested suspects, it was uncovered that the drugs had reached the island via Chennai in India and that the trafficking had been carried out under the guise of textile trading.
The Excise Department says that it was revealed that the crystal meth is smuggled into the country by women who conceal the drugs in their bodies.
The two arrested women have been remanded till May 26 after being produced at the Wattala Magistrate’s Court.
Methamphetamine is a stimulant drug which is alternatively known by its street names of crystal meth and ice. The drug is most popular in western countries, however it is learned that crystal meth is rapidly making inroads into Asian countries in recent times.
