Court orders release of Former Senior DIG Anura Senanayake

The Colombo Additional Magistrate has ordered the release of Former Senior DIG Anura Senanayake, sources confirmed.

 

Anura Senanayake, who was arrested and remanded in connection with the murder of Sri Lankan rugby player Wasim Thajudeen, was granted bail by the Colombo High Court last Friday (02).

 

He was arrested for allegedly withholding evidence pertaining to the case, and was placed in remand custody on May 23, 2016.

 

The Colombo High Court released the former Senior DIG on cash bail valued at Rs. 1 million and three personal bails of Rs. 5 million each.

 

The Court also ruled that Senanayake must appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) every Sunday morning, and that his passport must be surrendered to the custody of the Court.

 

The Court further warned the defendant that he would be remanded again until the conclusion of the case if he was found to be exerting pressure on the investigations or the witnesses.

 

Wasim Thajudeen, a Sri Lankan ruggerite and former Havelock SC captain, was killed in Colombo in May 2012.

 

Former Narahenpita Crimes OIC Sumith Perera who was also arrested and remanded on the charge of withholding evidence related to the murder was granted bail on February 16, 2017.
