The Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Qatar, ASP Liyanage stated all Sri Lankan’s living in Qatar will not be affected due to the severing of ties that occurred between Qatar and 7 other countries, as of yet.

He further added that although a certain sense of panic has set in, prompting many to stock up on essential goods, the nation of Qatar is well equipped to handle any situation and that shortages should not be expected.

Speaking to Ada Derana reporters, Liyanage further stated that the nation of Qatar is not facing any sort of difficulties at present, and that its currency, the Qatari Riyal is doing well in the global economy as of now.

Addressing the issue regarding the cancellation of flights to and from Qatar, by many of the airline companies operating in the Middle East, he urged the public to try to limit any form of air travel, to and from Qatar, due to the lack of transport mediums and the risk of the cancellation of flights.

The ambassador added that the Sri Lankan embassy in Qatar, has still not seen the need to intervene as no Sri Lankan nationals have been affected due to the severing of ties.

Liyanage concluded by stating that Sri Lanka’s bilateral relationship with Qatar is likely to remain as it is, however a solid decision on the relationship will be made in the next few days to come.

The statements have followed after a decision was made by seven countries around the world, namely; Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Libiya, Baharain and Maldives, to severe bilateral ties with the nation of Qatar.
