The cause for large-scale fish mortality in the Nandikadal lagoon and its vicinity is discovered to be the increase in water temperature.
Senior Scientist of the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) Environment Studies Division, Dr. Niroshan Wickramarachchi stated that the temperature rise was the result of the prevailing drought conditions.
Thousands of fish of various types washed up dead at the Nandikadal lagoon not long ago.
A team of experts of the Environment Studies Division conducted an investigation to infer the cause of the phenomenon.
Dr. Niroshan Wickramaarachchi also added that large-scale fish mortality was a common phenomenon that was experienced every year.
