The Sports Minister says he intends to introduce laws preventing the sale or auction of any medal won by an athlete in an international event.
Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara made the observation during an event held in Colombo on Wednesday. “We spend millions of rupees on athletes. So no athlete can think they can do whatever they like with their medals. We will try to implement new laws to prevent medals being sold or auctioned," Jayasekara said.
This came after Olympic Silver Medalist Susanthika Jayasinghe claimed that she has decided to auction her medal. Jayasinghe also alleged that the ministry has stopped paying her salary for her work as a consultant to the Sports Ministry.
However, Minister Jayasekara denied allegations made by Susanthika Jayasinghe that his ministry has stopped paying the salary.
