The present Government is postponing the provincial election without a valid reason, MP Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said, adding that if provincial elections had been conducted, responsible personnel would have co-operated more at the provincial level and rendered a better service to mitigate the recent crisis.
The MP stated this today (07) at the Joint Opposition’s press conference.
Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene also stated that the state mechanisms implemented in the face of the recent adverse weather conditions were weak, and added that Buddhist monks, and Local Government and Provincial Council Members worked hard to rescue and help the victims.
He proceeded to complain that as a result of this, the citizens of the country had no faith in the provincial ministers now, and added that ministers of other regions had thus been appointed to look into the needs and requirements of flood-hit regions.
