Two police constables who were accused of killing two civilians have been given a death penalty, by the Ampara High Court.

Ada Derana reporters revealed that the decision was made by the Western Provincial Appeal Court Judge and the former Provincial Court Judge of Ampara.

The two individuals are officers who had been working at the Ampara Central Camp Police, that had reportedly shot three individuals using the firearms provided by the government for legal duties, and then destroying the bodies at one of the perpetrators houses by attempting to cremate the dead bodies in September 1997.

Ada Derana reporters reveal that the penalty was passed after being indicted on 43 occasions, where out of the 43 suspects arrested, investigations helped narrow it down to the two responsible.

The decisions to the appoint a Sinhala jury was contested against by the defense lawyers, which caused the case to be drawn up to the High Court.

The verdict given was unique in itself as it was one of the few occasions where a verdict was provided, 20 years after the case was brought to Courts.

The ruling was given by the High Court Judge, Premachandra yesterday (7), at the Ampara High Court.
