The Minister of Wildlife and Sustainable Development, Gamini Jayawickrama stated that measures will be taken to investigate the welfare of elephants owned by individuals as private property.
Jayawickrama made this statement during a press conference held regarding the elephant attack which resulted in the passing away of a monk during a religious procession held recently.
He extended his deepest condolences to those affected by the incident.
While speaking with Ada Derana reporters, Gamini added that the reason behind such accidents was the employment of untrained elephant handlers, while deputy minister Sumeda G. Jayasinghe stated that recruiters should be more vigilant when choosing which elephants should take part in such activities.
