Terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka can’t be ruled out, the UK government said in its latest foreign travel advice with respect to Sri Lanka for British nationals today.
“Terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka can’t be ruled out. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners,” the British Foreign Office said.
It also added that “There’s a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests and British nationals, from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria.”
The British High Commission in Colombo in a Facebook post also said, “Changes have been made to the UK’s travel advice for Sri Lanka, as they have for countries around the world. The changes amend the way we describe the terrorism threat; they do not reflect an assessment by us that the level of threat in Sri Lanka has changed. This has been done as part of a global review of the way the threat from terrorism is described in our travel advice for British nationals. We have made these changes to ensure that British nationals have clear information on this important issue.”
The British Foreign Office further warned that monsoon rains have caused widespread flooding, leading to displacement of people, injuries and deaths. Heavy rains and landslips have also led to road closures affecting local transport links in Sri Lanka.
