Chief Minister of the Northern Province, C. V. Wigneswaran has requested the Ministers of Education and Agriculture in the Northern Province to resign effective immediately, today (14).
The decision was made after the 86 page report compiled by the committee set up to investigate corruption allegations made against ministers of the Northern Province.
Furthermore, Wigneswaran has requested the Ministers of Health, Civil Transport and Fisheries, to be suspended from their posts for a period of one month.
The investigative committee that was set up comprised of three retired judges, were able to produce a report which proved the allegations made against the Ministers of Education and Agriculture in the Northern Province.
When the ministers were asked to show cause with regard to the allegations, they both pleaded not guilty.
Meanwhile opposition members of the provincial council state that they were not provided with an opportunity to express their opinion on the matter and therefore staged a walkout in protest.
The next session of the provincial council is scheduled to be held on June 22 while a discussion on filling the vacant ministerial portfolios is to take place on that date.
