Minister of Special Assignments, Sarath Amunugama stated that the proposal made by the President to host an Aid conference has been approved by the cabinet.
The sentiments were brought out during a press conference held by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), today (15).
He added that this new program will only be executed during a time of crisis, and that on addition to the financial allocations that will be donated, the countries that will be providing aid will help full fill the other needs of the country as well.
Amunugama stated that a similar aid conference was held during the relief period of the 2004 Tsunami, which helped raise $100 million.
He further stated measures to host such an Aid conference have already gotten underway, and that their attention will be focused on conducting large scale relief programs.
Amunugama concluded by saying that a decision has been made to build dams at the beginning of the 4 main rivers in the country, on the hope of reducing the effect of floods due to monsoon rains in the future.
