The South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) should be abolished with immediate effect, a top government minister insisted Monday.
Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka told reporters in Colombo the authorities should not wait until a Supreme Court verdict is issued to abolish the institute.
“However, there should be a mechanism to deliver justice for the students as well,” he pointed out.
Ranawaka went on to say the students either should be reimbursed for their losses or should be directed to other medicine related fields.
Ranawaka said the situation is also set to worsen with prof. Carlo Fonseka’s decision to end his tenure as the chief of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC).
“It would have been better if the professor can remain in his position during this chaotic situation,” he added.
