A court order has been issued banning entry to the Sumerian burial ground in Agbopura, Vavuniya.
Police Media Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Ruwan Gunasekara stated that the ruling had been made by the Vavuniya Magistrate’s Court today (10).
According to the Police Media Spokesperson, the case will be taken up by the Court again on September 11, on which date, the Court has also requested for a report to be submitted on the incident.
Recent reports claim that the Sumerian burial ground at Agbopura is being destroyed by means of backhoes and bulldozers, on the basis of a development project. Residents complain that the burial ground was destroyed by Divisional Forest Conservation officers and officials of the Timber Corporation.
The Sumerian burial ground of Agbopura is believed to bear evidence of the Sri Lankan prehistoric man.
89 graves have been labelled as preservation sites.
An exploration in 1970 reportedly revealed that the burial site dates back over 105,000 years ago.
A team of specialists attached to the Colombo office of the Archaeological Department is scheduled to be dispatched to Agbopura either today (10) or tomorrow (11).
Director-General of the Department of Archaeology, Professor P. B. Mandawala states that further legal action will be taken after an investigation report is compiled by the specialist team.
