South Korea has granted an amnesty period of three months for Sri Lankans illegally working in South Korea to leave the country.
The Government of South Korea has announced that the Sri Lankan workers will be allowed to leave South Korea of their own volition from July 10 till October 10, the Sri Lankan Bureau of Foreign Employment said.
The Bureau added that those who return to the island before the elapse of the aforementioned amnesty period would also be exempted from legal action in Sri Lanka.
1,983 workers from Sri Lanka had illegally remained in South Korea from 2011 till 2016. The Foreign Employment Bureau is in the process of taking legal action and collecting cash bail worth Rs. 2 million in total from the relevant individuals.
Minister of Foreign Employment, Thalatha Athukorala stated that legal action would be taken against those who continue to remain in South Korea after the elapse of the 92-day amnesty period granted by the South Korean government.
