Lack of nursing staff making dengue treatment difficult - ACNU

The National Dengue Eradication Unit stated that the number of dengue patients will decline within the next two weeks, due to the eradication project that’s being carried out.

Dr. Prashila Samaraweera, Consultant Physician at the National Dengue Control Unit, mentioned that the eradication program will be implemented in areas reporting large numbers of cases, such as the area surrounding the Ministry of Health.

Hence, a special dengue eradication program will be conducted in the Western province, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Ratnapura and the Galle district on the 20, 21 and 22 of July.

Meanwhile, due to the lack of facilities available at hospitals to cope with the large influx of dengue patients, special measures will be taken to minimize the number of dengue patients admitted to the hospital, where instead they will receive treatment under a physician’s guidance at home.

Responding to a question posed by an Ada Derana journalist, regarding whether or not patients being treated from home go unrecorded, she stated that any individual receiving treatment for dengue regardless of whether the treatment is being administered by a private or public entity will be recorded by the officials responsible for the task.

Furthermore, the All Ceylon Nursing Union has stated that it has become increasingly difficult to treat those affected by dengue in hospitals, due to the severe shortage of nursing staff.
