Foreign Minister of Singapore visits Sri Lanka

Foreign Minister of Singapore, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan has arrived in Sri Lanka on a state visit.

 

The Singaporean Foreign Minister who arrived on the island last night (17) will reportedly remain in the country till Friday (21).

 

During his stay in Sri Lanka, Dr. Balakrishnan will reportedly be meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan.

 

Additionally, Dr. Balakrishnan is scheduled to hold a bilateral discussion with the Sri Lankan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ravi Karunanayake today (18), after which, both parties will preside over a joint press conference.

 

The Singaporean Foreign Minister will also be engaging in discussions with Ministers Patali Champika Ranawaka, Mangala Samaraweera, Malik Samarawickrama and Sagala Ratnayake.

 

Sources report that Dr. V. Balakrishnan will also pay a visit to the Jaffna District, where he is due to meet with the Governor and Chief Minister of the Northern Province.

 

Meanwhile, the Foreign Minister of Australia, Julie Bishop is also due to arrive on the island tomorrow (19).

 

In a statement detailing her visit, Bishop added that she will meet with President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Foreign Minister Ravi Karunanayake among other ministers to “discuss security cooperation and explore new economic opportunities in science, resources and energy.”

 

“President Sirisena and I will announce Australian assistance to combat dengue fever in Sri Lanka and discuss progress on the implementation of Sri Lanka’s reconciliation process, which is critical to its long-term security and prosperity,” Bishop said.
