The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has commended the Government of Sri Lanka for establishing the Office of Missing Persons (OMP), terming it as a ‘significant milestone’ for all Sri Lankans still searching for the truth about their missing loved ones.
“The United Nations stands ready to support this process and the Secretary-General looks forward to the OMP becoming operational as soon as possible, starting with the appointment of independent commissioners,” Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General said.
President Maithripala Sirisena has endorsed the necessary cause of action to implement the Office of Missing Persons and signed off on the relevant Act yesterday (July 20).
Foreign Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake told a media conference that the required members to the said Office to launch and implement its activities would be appointed by the Constitutional Council soon.
