Lawyers  of the North  will refrain from attending court proceedings today (24),  in connection to the shooting of the Police officer in Jaffna.

President of the Jaffna Bar Association, President’s Counsel Shantha Abhimanasingham, stated that lawyers would refrain from attending court proceedings in Mannar, Chavakachcheri, Kayts, Vavuniya, Killinochchi and Mullaitivu.

The intentions behind the protest were to show that they were against the shooting at Jaffna High Court judge, M. Ilchanchalian.

Speaking to Ada Derana, Shantha Abhimanasingham stated that this was the first time a High Court judge was targeted, after Sarath Ambepitiya was in 2004.

Abhimanasingham added that despite the sensitive environment surrounding Vidya’s case, such threats have the tendency to affect the independence of the judiciary when it comes to dealing with cases of this nature, and that authorities should work towards strengthening the security of the members involved in the judiciary.

He further added that the lawyers in the Northern province salute the late Police officer, for carrying out his duties to the best of his abilities.
