Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Dr. Rajitha Senaratne stated that the Kuliyapitiya Base Hospital, which is under the Wayamba Provincial Council, would be taken over by the government to establish the medical faculty at the Wayamba University.

He made these comments at a special discussion on establishing the medical faculty of the Wayamba University held yesterday (16) at the Ministry premises, Government Information Department reported.

Minister Senaratne said that the government had taken a policy decision to establish the medical faculty at the Wayamba University.

More medical faculties will be established at Sabaragamuwa University and the Moratuwa University, he added.

The Government source further reported that the Kuliyapitiya Base hospital would be developed as a teaching hospital once it is taken over by the government. The Minister has reportedly already instructed the officials to prepare the cabinet paper in this regard.

Further, a committee headed by the Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) has been appointed to fast-track the procedure. The other members of the committee represent the Health Ministry, Wayamba University and the Education Ministry, the Government Information Department stated.
