Sri Lanka Police today said that special security arrangements will be put in place for tomorrow’s 4th one-day international between Sri Lanka and India at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said that 1,000 police personnel will be on duty at the venue while CCTV camera surveillance will also be utilized to maintain peace and order.
The extra tight security measures come in the wake of unruly behavior by Sri Lankan cricket fans, angered by the national team’s lackluster performance, during the third One-day International at Pallekele.
During the game, irate fans vented their anger by throwing bottles on the field, which brought play to a halt for close to 45 minutes.
The incident held play up as authorities had to resort to mass evacuation at the venue before play could resume, and will now be perceived as a blot in the history of Sri Lankan cricket.
Sri Lanka play their fourth ODI against India on Thursday in Colombo, with the series already out of their grasps. Police are braced for more trouble and have been instructed to take adequate precaution.
