
A Sri Lankan national has been arrested by customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake with foreign currency worth over Rs 3.7 million.
The 44-year-old was intercepted by BIA Customs staff attached the Departure area while attempting to smuggle the foreign currency to Singapore by flight EK 348 at 3.00pm on Saturday (2).
The customs media spokesman said that 3500 Great Britain Pounds, 19000 Qatar Riyals, 2720 Kuwait Dinar and 5000 US dollars were found in the possession of the suspect.
The undeclared foreign currency is equivalent to Rs. 3,788,931.
The suspect was released on a penalty of Rs. 100, 000 having forfeited the currency, he said.
