
Customs officers attached to the Port Control Unit have detected 133,980 foreign cigarettes aboard a Vietnamese ship.
The value of the cigarettes has been assessed to be Rs. 6,699,000.
The Assistant Superintendents of Customs had detected the cigarettes aboard the ship MV THAI BINH 039 that was carrying cement aboard it. The ship was reportedly being captained by a Vietnamese national.
Following an inquiry, the Deputy Director of Customs, G. G. Premasiri had acquired the smuggled goods and placed them under Customs custody. The captain had also been issued a fine of Rs. 100,000.
