Australia and Sri Lanka have enhanced the efforts extended by both governments countering human trafficking by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) enabling further collaboration.
The MOU was signed by Department of Immigration and Border Protection Secretary Micheal Pezzullo and Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Kapila Waidyaratne in Canberra yesterday (6).
The MOU will better facilitate intelligence sources that share information on locating, investigating and intercepting people smugglers. It will also enable the return to Sri Lanka of people involved in smuggling. The MOU also targets the mitigation of money laundering and the entry of illicit substances through smuggling agencies.
Government Officials from both states have acknowledged the MOU as a progressive step taken to mitigate the human trafficking menace that has caused disruption in both countries.
