President Maithripala Sirisena left for New York today (17), to attend the 72nd General Assembly of the United Nations (UN).
President Sirisena who will address the General Assembly on September 19, will be addressing the event for the third time.
The 72nd Regular Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 72) convened at UN Headquarters on September 12. The General Debate will open on Tuesday, 19 September 2017, with a focus on the theme, ‘Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and a Decent Life for All on a Sustainable Planet’.
The President who is scheduled to address the Assembly during the evening session on September 19, will brief world leaders on the reconciliation process that has been adopted by the Sri Lankan government as well as the consensual political agenda that was fostered within the country. President Sirisena will also brief the assembly on initiatives taken to declare 2017 as the year of Poverty Alleviation and will also speak on the numerous ‘Green’ initiatives within the island nation.
It has been reported that during his stay in the US, the President will take part in numerous programmes including a meeting with the Sri Lankan community residing in the US.
