Presidential committee on SAITM submits report to President

The Presidential committee headed by Dr.Harsha de Silva that was appointed to document a resolution to the ongoing issues surrounding the South Asian Instritue of Technology and Medicine, submitted their report inclusive of their suggestions to the President on September 11. 

 

The Presidential Committee appointed to resolve the issues related to SAITM was chaired by Minister of Policy Planning and Economic Development and included Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education and Highways D.C. Dissanayake, Secretary, Ministry of Health, Nutrition, and Indigenous Medicine Janaka Sugathadasa, Attorney-General Jayantha Jayasuriya (Represented by Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Rajaratnam), and Chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC) Prof Mohan de Silva as members.

 

The committee met with members of the SLMC, Doctors, Deans of Medical Faculties, University Representatives, Teachers, Management members of SAITM and parents of children currently being educated at SAITM for 10 days to document a feasible solution to the ongoing issue that will do justice to all parties that are involved.    

 

Several recommendations were made by the committee including the proposal to suspend the admission of new students to medical program at SAITM until December 31, 2017 or until the government gazettes a minimum standard for medical education. 

 

The committee also proposed to abolish the current ownership structure of SAITM and to establish a broad-based not for profit management system as a public-private partnership. 

 

The committee expects an amicable solution to be provided utilizing the suggestions provided to satisfy the ambitions of all the parties involved.
