The Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms stated that a program will be introduced to grant supervised home visits to prison inmates in the near future.
It has been reported that this particular exemption will be made for prisoners serving a term that exceeds 3 years. It was further mentioned that prisoners who are serving time for severe crimes will not be eligible for the program.
Accordingly prison inmates serving a sentence less than 20 years who are granted pardon for good behavior will be allowed supervised home visits through this program. It has been proposed to allow inmates who have served more than a quarter of their term and have maintained good behavior to be allowed home visits.
The program will allow prisoners serving a term exceeding 20 years home visits once a period of 10 years has been completed from their sentence.
Inmates sentenced to death or life imprisonment will not be granted home visits under the proposed program.
It has been reported that the Minister of Prison Reforms D.M.Swaminathan approved of the proposal and steps are being taken to establish introduce supervised home visits in the near future.
