The Misery index of Sri Lanka had increased up to 12.3 due to the rise of inflation rate, said Joint Opposition (JO) MP Bandula Gunawardene. He made this statement at a media briefing held today (01). However the index stood at 7.6 in 2014, and it reached 5.6 in 2015, as prices of goods and services in the world declined in the specific year, the MP pointed out. “The rural community is living under great distress as they are unable to settle their debts. The action taken by the government to decrease prices of 25 goods and to distribute them through Sathosa was not practical,” he added. Gunawardene also alleged that a coconut and rice mafia is being operated throughout the country and the government is not taking any effort to cease it.
