President Maithripala Sirisena stated that his vision as the Head of State is to establish a new constitution that will be devoid of prejudice, enhance unity and strengthen the parliament. 

He also stated that each and every citizen is individually responsible in the establishment and protection of a society that respects individuality, encourages economic welfare and promotes good governance. 

Speaking at the 70th anniversary celebration of parliamentary democracy earlier today (3), President Sirisena stressed the importance of the reforms implemented by the Soulbury Commission in 1947 that established the parliament 70 years ago. He further stated that all the reforms that strengthened parliamentary power implemented thereafter are seen as democratic victories for the people of Sri Lanka. 

“The Executive Presidency that was solidified in 1978 saw the parliament of Sri Lanka regress due to the unlimited powers vested in the President. Post January 8th 2015 however the current government has strived to curtail those unlimited powers to establish a more democratic, unified Sri Lanka through a new constitution” the President said. 

Speaking on the future of Sri Lanka, President Maithripala Sirisena stated that the island nation will look to strengthen ties with all international allies. He stated that the people of Sri Lanka must rekindle the core values of our society to be an exemplary nation before the international community.
