
The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) reported that there were over 2500 social media related complaints lodged to the CERT team within the course of 2017.
Chief Information Security Engineer of CERT Roshan Chandraguptha stated that the majority of complaints were of anonymous hackers utilizing private pictures posted on social media for obscene purposes.
He stated that the CERT team identified that the main reason for this problem was the careless acceptance of unknown people on social media platforms.
It was also reported that certain cyber criminals utilized personal phone numbers to conduct illicit activities.
Roshan Chandraguptha stated that cyber criminals mainly operate through Facebook and other major social media platforms.
