
The eighth Conference of the Association of SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians (ASSP) is all set to commence today (04).
This year’s summit will be chaired by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister and Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs Ranil Wickremesinghe will deliver the keynote address at the opening ceremony today. Speaker Karu Jayasuriya will deliver the welcome speech at the inauguration.
The theme of this year’s conference is “A platform for South Asian Parliamentary Members to work together on the 6 Agenda for Sustainable Development by the year 2030”.
The conference will be held from October 04(today) to 06 at Hotel Hilton, Colombo.
The conference is being conducted under the auspices of the Association of SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians.
It was set up in 1992 to promote people-to people contacts and interactions among parliamentarians so as to further deepen the roots of parliamentary democracy in the region.
The first conference was held in India in 1995. The second was held in Islamabad in 1997, the third in Dhaka in 1999
