
The local big onions farmers allege that they have gain no profit despite the tax implied on imported onions was increased by the government.
The availability of big onions in the local market, before the tax was implied is the main reason for their allegation.
The local big onion farmers request relative authorities to look into their matter and to provide them with a suitable solution.
President Maithripala Sirisena, last month, instructed the Ministry of Finance to impose a hundred per cent tax on imported big onions.
The President issued this order while directing his attention towards the problems faced by local big onion farmers when selling their crops, the President’s Media Division said.
Accordingly the tax imposed on imported big onions was increased to 100%.
