
The youth who was assaulted by a senior Police Officer after being detained at the protests organized by the Joint Opposition in Hambantota on October 6, was admitted to the Matara hospital a short while ago.
Media spokesperson for the Department of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya stated that the youth was admitted to the Matara hospital under the protection of prison guards.
A video was documented by media personnel who were presented at the Hambantota riots on October 6, of a senior Police Officer brutally assaulting a young man who was arrested following unruly behavior at the protests.
The arrested persons were remanded following a trial following which they received treatment at the Tangalle hospital.
Both the National Police Commission and the Human Rights Commission have launched independent inquiries into the incident.
