Police Officials confirm that 40 suspects were apprehended earlier today (9), for blocking the Kekirawa-Thalawa main road following the death of a motorcyclist in Ipalogama.
A motorcyclist lost his life following a collision with a cab in Ipalogama on September 29.
The driver of the cab was arrested and produced before the Kekirawa Magistrate’s court where he was granted bail.
Following the verdict, residents of region staged violent protests in retaliation of the ruling on September 30, where the Kekirawa-Thalwa main road was obstructed causing hindrances to all motorists.
Additionally, residents of Kekirawa blocked the Kekirawa-Thalawa main road once again on October 2, on the same day that the diseased person was laid to rest.
Following the events that ensued, Police Officials identified 66 individuals who were involved in the protests and arrested eight of them for disturbing the peace and causing hindrances to the public. The arrested persons were remanded till October 10.
It has also been reported that the Police made several more arrests during the ensuing time period.
Police Officials state that a further 40 suspects were apprehended today (9), in relation to the Ipalogama incident. The suspects are to be produced before the Kekirawa Magistrate’s court today (9).
