One person was critically wounded and hospitalised following a scuffle between the owner of jewellery store in the Thalawathugoda area and two armed robbers who had attempted to ransack the shop.
Police said that the two robbers had arrived at the jewellery store at around 12.50pm today (2) and attempted to loot the shop by threatening the employees with a firearm.
However, the owner of the shop wielding a sharp object had attempted to fend off the would-be robbers.
While the shop owner had been grappling with the two suspects, one of the robbers had fired his firearm before they both had fled the scene, police said.
The jewellery shop owner, who was injured in the incident, has been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital for treatment.
It is still uncertain as to whether he had sustained a knife injury or a gunshot wound.
Thalangama Police is conducting an investigation into the incident.
