
Long queues of vehicles have been reported at fuel stations in Colombo and suburbs due to fears of a possible fuel shortage.
Long queues have also been reported at fuel stations outside Colombo and in other major cities.
The sudden increase in purchase of fuel has reportedly resulted in shortages at fuel stations in parts of Colombo and other cities.
Petroleum trade unions say that rejecting a consignment of substandard petrol had led to this situation.
Attempts by Ada Derana to contact Minister of Petroleum Resources Development Arjuna Ranatunga to inquire with regard to the possibility of a shortage failed.
However, officials of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources Development say that there is nosuch scarcity of fuel supplies in the country and that a new shipment of petrol is due to arrive on Monday.
