Foreign media outlets confirm that there were several Sri Lankans on board a passenger vessel that capsized in the Mediterranean Sea while on route to Italy.
Reports confirm that over 700 passengers aboard the vessel were rescued when the event occurred.
Foreign sources also confirm that immediate response teams were able to recover 23 bodies of individuals who lost their lives during the calamity.
Italian authorities have confirmed that several Sri Lankans were rescued but are yet to confirm if any Sri Lankans were killed during the event.
It was also reported that passengers from Pakistan, Libya, Bangladesh, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Germany, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon were rescued from the crash site.
Italian authorities reported that several naval vessels traveling to the coast of Italy through the Mediterranean Sea encountered severe hardships while crossing the Mediterranean waters.
