Residents of Puttalam had chased down and apprehended a 21-year old youth who was attempting to flee the area after raping a 15-year old girl at her residence in Puttalam.
The suspect was handed over to the Police after being beaten by the uncle of the young girl.
Reports confirm that the incident occurred last night when the young girl was home alone. The suspect had entered her residence and abused her.
The uncle of the girl had entered the residence while the suspect was in the house causing him to attempt to escape. The suspect was cornered and apprehended by the uncle together with residents of the area.
Police sources state that at the time of arrest, the suspect was under the influence of alcohol.
The young girl has been admitted to the Puttalam hospital for medical treatment while the suspect is due to be produced before the Puttalam Magistrate’s court.
