At least 13 passengers were wounded and hospitalised after a private bus traveling from Kataragama to Colombo veered off the road and crashed into a tree at Yayawatta, Tangalle on the Tissa-Matara main road this morning.
Police suspect that the accident, which had occurred at around 4.00am today (28), had been caused as a result of the driver of the vehicle losing control due to inclement weather causing roads to be slippery and the excessive speed it had been traveling in.
Police said that a woman and a foreign national are among the injured passengers, who were admitted to the Tangalle Hospital. A spokesman for the hospital said that 4 of the patients have already been discharged and that none of them are in critical condition.
The driver and the conductor of the bus have fled the scene immediately after the incident while Tangalle Police have launched investigations to apprehend them.
