Sri Lanka has said that it is working to create its own Aadhar-like infrastructure for smooth delivery of government services.

Talking to a group of foreign journalists in Colombo today, Sri Lankan minister for telecommunications and digital infrastructure Harin Fernando said they are working to provide a unique number to everyone in the country and process in this regard is on.

Aadhar is the world’s largest biometric ID system, with over 1.19 billion enrolled members as of 30 Nov 2017.

Over 99% of Indians aged 18 and above had been enrolled in Aadhaar, which is a 12 digit unique-identity number issued to all Indian residents based on their biometric and demographic data.

He said that his government will also like to develop a mobile app on the lines of UMANG app in India for providing various government-led services.

UMANG or Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance, is a Government of India all-in-one single unified secure multi-channel multi-platform multi-lingual multi-service freeware mobile app.

Fernando said that more discussions will take place during proposed visit of India’s Minister for Information technology Ravi Shankar Prasad to Sri Lanka next month.

The minister said that his government has taken several steps to improve digital connectivity and the country is placed above India and China for providing high internet speed. He said there is a plan to develop 30 thousand wifi spots around 10 thousand schools to boost connectivity and promote digitalization.
