
An airport duty free shop employee was apprehended yesterday (04) while in possession of 7kg gold, Sri Lanka Customs Spokesman said.
The 43-year-old employee working at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) Departure area, was apprehended with gold worth Rs 50 million at the visitors lobby of BIA by Security personnel attached to Airport and Aviation Services Sri Lanka (AASL) and was handed over to the BIA Customs.
61 yellow gold biscuits and 1kg of gold jewelry were found inside a girdle worn by the suspect.
The employee had been given the stock of gold by two Indians at the transit area of BIA, preliminary investigations conducted by Customs reveled.
The three suspects are being questioned and further investigations are being conducted by BIA Customs staff under the direction of Customs Director I.M. Jabeer, and Customs Deputy Director Jagath Obeysekara.
